Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
