Roughly 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Police say they were contacted late on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Officers then discovered many other smeared automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are banned in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report initial examinations suggest the substance was likely human blood.
"There is still no lead as to its origin; officials are not yet informed of any injuries in association with the incident," they added.
City officials stated they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the community for details.
An important political figure commented the incident rendered him speechless and had to be resolved promptly.
"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the far-right attack in 2020," he posted on a platform, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a gunman targeting individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
