The Year 2026 Dubbed the Age of the Amphibian Adventure.
While I found the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am certain that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these hoppy characters. Given that a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.
From Classic Icons to Modern Mania
Croaking characters are not at all new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a niche presence. Yet, their popularity has markedly exploded in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an overwhelming flood of results. Granted, some of these are obscure titles, a great many are bona fide amphibian adventures.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To understand this phenomenon, I performed a deep dive into the recent history of hoppy gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, focusing on games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The findings tell a compelling story: a marked increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The frog's rising status in the cultural zeitgeist is partially apparent elsewhere, such as the revival of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the trend in gaming looks especially powerful.
The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics
Honestly, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs have natural design advantages for game developers.
- Weird Little Guys: They are ideally shaped to be designed as quirky characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their long tongues and sticky tongues facilitate a myriad of unique mechanics.
Many of the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the possibility for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the biggest year yet.
Should these games perform well—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we might just be witnessing a genuine amphibian entertainment revival.
