From Praise to Fury: Conservative Reaction to Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Conservative reactions to the partial release of documents related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship portray former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.

Justice Department Defends Censorship with Fervent Rhetoric

Justice Department officials defended the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been so open with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the censorship process.

Concerns Prompted by Redactions

While the former president's identity and likeness appear in portions of the documents, the extensive black blocks raise significant concerns about what may be concealed beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for increased transparency.

“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and implied that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he added.

A Faction of Conservative Figures Swing Behind the Release

However, some rightwing pundits and former President loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.

The release—from a DOJ led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely redacted, and numerous of the men depicted in pictures have their faces obscured.

But a few are not, featuring high-profile figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed certain conservative voices to launch the attack.

“This is pretty rich how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.

“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”

Former President Spokesperson Releases Response

Clinton has consistently said he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been hiding those files for months only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.

“This is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response added.

Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Muted

Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was relatively muted following the release, particularly when compared with the vociferous demands for transparency that came before the legislative vote to enact a law mandating the documents' publication.

Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a complete disclosure. In February, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing personalities were provided physical binders of materials that contained no new information.
